Stellenbeschreibung
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V.; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and make them adaptable, safe and sustainable. In close cooperation with partners from research, industry and other maritime security stakeholders, we combine technological innovation with practical expertise and offer you the opportunity to work on pioneering projects.

What To Expect

This is an interesting opportunity for a dedicated Master's student (m/f/d) to work on a fibre optic research project in the field of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) with a focus on underwater applications. The aim of the work is the acquisition and analysis of fibre optic measurement data, and the development of detection and characterization methods for acoustic signals in the maritime environment. There is a broad scope for the prospective student to define his or her master project. Depending on individual skills and knowledge, the focus can either be on data acquisition (use and configuration of underwater fibre-optic sensor networks, planning and implementation of measurement campaigns and field tests with subsequent evaluation) or on data analysis (signal processing, evaluation of large data sets, data compression and development of new analysis methods).

Your tasks

  • Participation in a research project on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for hydroacoustic underwater applications
  • Acquisition and analysis of fibre-optic measurement data for the detection and characterization of acoustic signals
  • Focus depending on prior knowledge and skills (experimental field work or algorithm development)
  • Analysis, interpretation and documentation of the results

Your profile

  • Ongoing Master's degree in physics, geophysics, engineering, oceanography, computer science or a related subject
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following fields: Signal processing, fibre optics, hydro acoustics, experimental field work, data science and machine learning
  • Programming skills (e.g. Python, C++)
  • Very good written and spoken English skills

Remuneration will be paid up to pay group E5 TVöD depending on qualifications and tasks assigned.

We look forward to getting to know you!
