9-phase journey

A practical sequence from first research to first job

Steps finished: 0/230%
  1. Phase 1

    0/3

    Research and decide

Start with programme fit, not paperwork. A clean school tracker prevents most expensive mistakes.

  2. Phase 2

    0/3

    Tests and documents

Prepare language proof, transcripts, translations, APS, CV, and letters before deadlines become stressful.

  3. Phase 3

    0/2

    Apply

Know whether the route is direct, uni-assist, VPD, supervisor-led, or a mix of those.

  4. Phase 4

    0/2

    Admission and deferral

Late admission can be normal, but non-EU visa timing may still make the semester unrealistic.

  5. Phase 5

    0/2

    Finance and insurance

Your blocked account, health insurance, and payment confirmations become visa and enrollment proof.

  6. Phase 6

    0/2

    Visa

Prepare the mission-specific checklist, book early, and keep originals plus clean copies ready.

  7. Phase 7

    0/3

    Pre-arrival

Housing, flights, train routes, and daily apps decide whether your first week feels controlled.

  8. Phase 8

    0/3

    Arrival and settle

Anmeldung, bank access, SIM, enrollment, and residence permit tasks unlock normal life.

  9. Phase 9

    0/3

    Work and life

Only after the basics are stable should job search, taxes, and work-hour compliance become the focus.

Frequently asked questions

Questions students ask before starting

Who is this roadmap for?

It is built for non-EU international students first, because the visa, blocked account, APS, and arrival sequence is more complex. EU students can still use the research and arrival parts.

What does the APS toggle do?

It adds APS-specific checkpoints for students from countries where APS review is part of the Germany application route. Always confirm your country-specific APS office requirements.

Is the blocked account amount always the same?

No. The 2026 official student visa page lists at least EUR 11,904 for a blocked account, but amounts can change. Confirm the final number with the German mission handling your visa.

When should I start searching for working student jobs?

Do not ignore jobs, but stabilize admission, visa, housing, enrollment, and arrival basics first. Then search for roles that fit your field, language level, and weekly schedule.

Why is the PhD route different?

PhD applicants may need a supervisor, research proposal, scholarship, or paid research contract before the formal university process is clear. The path is often less portal-driven than Bachelor's or Master's.
