The internship assignment:

We are seeking a highly motivated Controls Design Engineer Intern to support the design, documentation, and implementation of building automation and industrial control systems for our fast‑paced, high‑performance manufacturing environment.

This internship provides hands‑on exposure to large‑scale facilities, mission‑critical systems, and advanced automation strategies. You will work closely with senior controls engineers, facilities teams, vendors, and commissioning partners to help design and optimize systems that enable safe, efficient, and sustainable operations.

What You'll Do

  • Support the design and documentation of building automation systems (BAS), including HVAC, electrical, life‑safety interfaces, and energy management systems.
  • Take part in creating and reviewing: Controls schematics and wiring diagrams, I/O point lists, sequences of operation, network and architecture diagrams.
  • Participate in controls standards development and design best practices for large facilities.
  • Support integration of PLCs, DDC controllers, sensors, actuators, and VFDs.
  • Assist with system testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities (field or simulated).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including mechanical, electrical, construction, facility management, manufacturing and IT.
  • Analyze system performance data and support continuous improvement and energy optimization initiatives.

  • What You'll Bring

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering or related field.
  • Basic understanding of control systems fundamentals (PID, feedback loops, control logic).
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, VAVs, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, EPLAN, or similar drafting tools.
  • Strong analytical mindset and willingness to learn in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Preferred - Exposure to Building Automation Systems (e.g., Siemens, Schneider, Honeywell, Tridium Niagara)
  • A plus - Basic PLC programming experience (Structured Text, Ladder Logic, or Function Block)
  • Desired - Familiarity with: BACnet, Modbus, or Ethernet/IP, sensors, actuators, and industrial instrumentation.
  • Candidates are expected to uphold and actively promote sustainability principles in their daily work, operating in line with Tesla Global Environmental, Health, Safety & Security (EHS&S) Policy and EMAS requirements, fostering a culture of continuous environmental improvement.
