We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Working Student to join our Hardside Prototyping team on-site at our Head Office in Cologne, Germany. The successful candidate will be instrumental in the design and delivery of high-quality mock-ups and prototypes for various Product Development and Innovation projects. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and creative environment, contributing directly to the realization of innovative products.
Job Responsibilities
Prototype Development:
- Under the guidance of the Workshop Manager, execute and deliver hardside component prototypes in alignment with project requirements for Development and Innovation initiatives.
- Analyze prototype requests, collaborating with requesters and the Workshop Manager to define and validate both physical and digital deliverables.
- Assist the Workshop Manager in planning and organizing prototyping activities, including defining necessary resources (materials, equipment, personnel) and establishing project timelines and priorities. CAD (i.e., Rhino, Solidworks) knowledge is essential for the planning of various tasks.
- Source and procure prototype deliverables, ensuring timely execution according to validated plans.
- Provide support to the Workshop Manager on technical/functional concepts, material selection, and construction methodologies.
- Fabricate physical prototypes, which includes tasks such as cutting, sanding, lacquering, 3D printing (or other rapid prototyping technologies), and assembling design mock-ups and hardside components.
- Proactively contribute innovative ideas and suggest efficient solutions to enhance prototype deliverables, thereby facilitating informed decision-making in hardside component development.
- Assist the Workshop Manager in the daily operational organization of the workshop, adhering to established processes and procedures.
- Maintain clear and efficient communication with the Workshop Manager and prototype requesters regarding all prototyping activities.
- Proactively engage with the manager and requesters to gather all necessary inputs required for fulfilling prototype requests.
- Currently enrolled student in Product/Industrial Design, Engineering, or a related field (working student status required).
- 1–3+ years of experience in prototyping, model making, or workshop fabrication, preferably within a product design or industrial setting (student-level experience accepted).
- Hands-on mindset with a strong passion for making, building, and testing physical prototypes using workshop machinery, fabrication equipment, and manual crafting techniques.
- Practical expertise in fabrication techniques, including 3D printing and traditional handcrafting methods; CNC machining and vacuum forming are a plus.
- Strong understanding of materials and their properties, including plastics, metals, composites, and woods.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, CAD models (e.g., SolidWorks, Rhino), and design specifications.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in a workshop environment, with a safety-first mindset.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and translate rough design visions into feasible mock-ups according to the product brief.
- Languages: Fluent English a MUST, German a PLUS.
