Research Team Manager - Mechanisms & Actuators

Looking for a taste of working life in an international, future-focused corporate group? Then join us as an intern/master thesis student (m/f/d) and familiarize yourself with our industrial research team for a minimum of 6 months. You will be involved in large-scale projects and perform a defined set of duties independently. Use your time at ABB Corporate Research to build a network and help us develop future-proof technologies.


Key Responsibilities

The work model for the role is:

You will contribute to technology scouting activities focused on the electromagnetic design of novel actuators. You will explore alternative design approaches and materials for next-generation actuator topologies.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Conducting a comprehensive literature review to identify state-of-the-art and emerging trends in electromagnetic actuator design.
  • Investigating alternative actuator topologies and materials, evaluating their potential for given industrial applications.
  • Developing system-level simulation models that couple finite element analysis (FEA), control and power electronics as well as mechanical loads.
  • Benchmarking different actuator concepts based on various performance criteria.
  • Collaborating closely with experienced engineers and researchers to evaluate findings and derive recommendations.
  • Documentation of the work and presentation to different ABB stakeholders.


Qualifications For The Role

  • You are currently enrolled in a Master's program in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related technical field.
  • You have solid theoretical background in electromagnetics and electrical machines. Familiarity with limited-stroke actuators or magnetic materials is desirable.
  • You have experience with electromagnetic simulation tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, COMSOL Multiphysics or FEMM.
  • You have strong analytical skills and ability to conduct systematic literature and patent research.
  • You are interested in sustainable technologies and alternative design approaches for electromagnetic devices.
  • You bring hands-on experience with test setups involving electrical machines or actuators.
  • Proficiency in English with the ability to convey technical findings effectively in reports and presentations.
