The GEO department is offering Geo-Information Solutions based on multi-sensor data with focus on radar satellites. The alignment of vision, concepts and specific requirements together with customers, as well as internal departments like Engineering, is key.

As an intern you will learn about: The ESA BIOMASS mission offers completely new possibilities for global biomass and CO2 tracking through the first-time use of a spaceborne P-band SAR radar. In this application context, you will gain a deep understanding and practical experience in the exploitation of PolInSAR and TomoSAR data. Furthermore, you will work on utilizing P-band backscatter characteristics in combination with other data sources (e.g., LiDAR) for the analysis, calibration, retrieval of quantitative forest parameter estimates, and validation.

Your Tasks And Responsibilities

In the context of P-band BIOMASS mission exploitation for TIER3 carbon estimates

  • Test site selection, search & procurement of free reference data (field measurements, LiDAR data)
  • Reference data curation and pre-processing
  • Install and make use of open-source libraries for BIOMASS level 2 processing like BioPAL, MAAP or use available GAMMA software for specific SAR processing tasks
  • PolInSAR/ TomoSAR processor code familiarization and workflow setup
  • Extraction of forest height and 3D forest canopy information from PolInSAR and tomographic signals
  • Understand 3D signals with respect to reference information
  • Testing, verification and documentation of results
  • Report on information properties, limitations, potential enhancements
  • Workflow documentation

Desired Skills And Qualifications

  • Enrolled full-time student (d/f/m) in the area of Computer Science, Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics, Geography or an equivalent field of study
  • Background Knowledge in digital image processing of remote sensing data Knowledge of Synthetic Aperture Radar specifically interferometric techniques
  • Profound knowledge and experience in Python
  • Experience with GIS (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) and image processing software (e.g. GAMMA, ERDAS Imagine, SNAP)
  • Languages: English and / or German (second is a plus)
  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently
