Job description

At SWARM Biotactics, we're creating biorobots: living, intelligent systems based on insects. Each one carries a custom-designed backpack that enables wireless control, sensing, and secure communication.

Biorobot swarms combine the agility of biology with AI, sensors, and swarm coordination - unlocking capabilities where conventional machines fail.

We are the only company in the world doing this, and we're pushing the edge of what's possible in every domain: from biology to embedded hardware to swarm intelligence.

📍 Reliable indoor positioning is a critical capability for the next generation of autonomous biorobotic systems.

We are looking for a motivated and driven Working Student or Research Intern (full- or part-time) to help us develop and evaluate localization and navigation technologies for GPS-denied environments.

You will work directly with our Robotics & Autonomy Team on visual-inertial localization, dataset evaluation, and deployment-oriented perception systems.

We strongly encourage candidates who enjoy building real systems, running experiments, and taking ownership of technical challenges.

🔬 Things you could work on

  • Benchmark and evaluate Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) pipelines
  • Build tooling for automated evaluation, visualization, and comparison of localization algorithms
  • Improve localization performance through sensor fusion and state estimation approaches
  • Generate, curate, and manage datasets for indoor localization experiments
  • Support deployment of perception and localization pipelines on resource-constrained embedded platforms
  • Develop testing and validation procedures for real-world experiments
  • Collaborate with robotics, perception, and navigation engineers to translate research into deployable systems

✅ Requirements

  • Enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or C++
  • Experience with Linux development environments
  • Experience with robotics, computer vision, SLAM, localization, or state estimation through coursework, research, or personal projects
  • Familiarity with ROS2
  • Ability to work independently and communicate technical findings clearly
  • Strong self-organization and ownership mindset

⭐ Nice to Have

  • Experience with Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO)
  • Experience with SLAM systems
  • Familiarity with Kalman Filters, EKFs, factor graphs, or optimization-based state estimation
  • Experience with OpenCV
  • Experience with PyTorch
  • Experience with embedded systems or microcontrollers
  • Experience with Docker and CI/CD
  • Experience evaluating robotics datasets

🚀 Why SWARM Biotactics

  • We're well-funded and expanding fast in a space no one else is in
  • You'll join a world-class team working on the frontier of science and engineering
  • You'll work directly with robotics researchers and engineers on real autonomy challenges
  • Your work will contribute to the core localization and navigation capabilities of future biorobotic systems
  • You will have significant ownership and the opportunity to shape technical direction from day one

🤝 Join the Swarm

If you're excited about robotics, localization, perception, and deploying intelligent systems in the real world, we'd love to hear from you.
Feel free to apply directly via LinkedIn or send your application materials (CV, academic transcripts, links to projects if available) to youssef.farah[at]swarm-biotactics[dot]com.
We look forward to hearing from you.
