Description provided by Portfolio Doc
Portfolio DOC is a Germany-based fintech startup building a digital investment advisory platform for private investors.
We are looking for a highly motivated Backend Engineering Intern to join us this summer and contribute directly to our upcoming product launch.
This is a hands-on, high-ownership role. You will ship production code that becomes part of the live product, working directly with the founders, an experienced fund manager, and data scientists.
You will work on launch-critical backend systems, including APIs, databases, data flows, logging, testing, reliability, and infrastructure. This role is best suited for someone who can move fast, take ownership, and build independently with direct feedback from the founding team.
Tech stack: Go, PostgreSQL, Docker, GitHub, Azure/VPS, Notion
What we are looking for:
- Strong CS, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related background
- Backend experience with Go, Python, Node.js, or similar
- Solid understanding of APIs, databases, Git, and backend fundamentals
- Ability to move fast, take ownership, and build independently
- Product mindset and interest in fintech, investing, or AI-driven software
Outstanding shipped contributions may receive additional performance rewards of up to €1,000.
- Strong performers may continue into a full-time role after the internship or graduation and become an early engineer at Portfolio DOC. Full-time team members may receive accommodation support and equity participation linked to the success of the startup, depending on role and contribution.
Working student essentials
What this Tech internship in Hamburg means for you: the pay rules, the social contributions, and what international students should check before applying.
Weekly hours
Internships have no 20-hour cap, but a voluntary internship longer than three months generally has to pay at least the German minimum wage. Mandatory internships in your study programme are exempt.
Working student rulesSocial contributions
Mandatory internships are largely exempt from social contributions. Voluntary internships are treated like regular employment once they run long enough, so contributions usually apply.
