Role & Responsibilities

As a Hardware Training System Engineer Intern, you will work closely with our engineering and training teams to design, build, and assemble hands-on hardware training systems. You will bridge the gap between mechanical/electrical design and practical instructional hardware, turning technical concepts into robust learning setups. Your tasks include:

Hardware Design & Prototyping

• Design, 3D model (CAD), and prototype custom mechanical and electrical hardware components, enclosures, and mounting solutions for training rigs.

• Use 3D printing, rapid prototyping, and workshop manufacturing techniques to fabricate custom parts and learning modules.

• Handle hands-on assembly, wiring, and integration of electrical, mechanical, and sensor components (including basic custom PCB layout or prototyping where applicable).

Component Selection & Vendor Management

• Evaluate, select, and source off-the-shelf mechanical, electrical, and automation components based on learning system requirements.

• Research vendors, evaluate supplier specifications, compare manufacturing techniques, and optimize component selection for cost, reliability, and lead time.

Platform & Learning Hardware Support

• Set up, test, and calibrate physical hardware platforms, testbeds, and educational rigs to ensure safe and reliable operation.

• Collaborate with Subject-Matter Experts (SMEs) to align hardware capabilities with learning goals and practical lab exercises.

• Document assembly processes, bills of materials (BOM), schematics, and maintenance guides to support knowledge transfer.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Currently pursuing, or recently completed, a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

• Hands-on background with manufacturing systems, MakerLabs, FabLabs, or student project teams.

• Solid experience in 3D CAD modeling (e.g., FreeCAD, Fusion 360) and practical additive manufacturing (3D printing).

• Strong fundamentals in mechanical assembly, electrical wiring, component selection, and practical workshop tools.

• Understanding of manufacturing techniques, vendor selection, and hardware sourcing.

• Experience or interest in PCB design and layout (e.g., KiCad, Altium, Eagle) is a plus.

• Interest in educational hardware design and knowledge transfer — experience with educational trainer systems is a plus.

• Good written and spoken English; German language skills are a plus.

• Valid work/internship permit to take up an internship in Germany.

What We Offer

• Hands-on experience building real training systems and testbeds for IoT, 5G/6G, and Embedded AI, alongside experienced engineers and SMEs.

• Direct mentorship in hardware design, prototyping, and educational system development.

• A flexible internship format: voluntary or as part of a study program, for 3–6 months, starting November/December 2026.

• A certificate of internship and the possibility of a follow-on role at IICT GmbH based on performance.

• A collaborative, international, research-driven environment spanning technical development and training/learning design.

• Access to state-of-the-art hardware, labs, and testbeds, onsite at our Offenburg office.
