Die nachhaltige Entwicklung ländlicher Räume spielt eine wichtige Rolle in der Bewältigung der multiplen Krisen (Klimawandel, Biodiversitätsverlust, Umweltzerstörung, Hunger, Ungleichheiten) und schafft Zukunftsperspektiven für die Menschen im ländlichen Raum. Das "Sektorvorhaben Resiliente Ländliche Räume" (SV RLR), unterstützt das Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) bei der Stärkung der Resilienz im ländlichen Raum und der Positionierung der Beiträge der deutschen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit auf der internationalen Ebene.

Der Verlust gesunder Böden ist neben dem Klimawandel eine der größten Herausforderungen für die Ernährungssicherung, besonders in Entwicklungsländern. Die UN-Konvention zur Desertifikationsbekämpfung (UNCCD) arbeitet hierzu. Mit dem Sektorvorhaben unterstützt die GIZ die Umsetzung internationaler Verpflichtungen Deutschlands durch konzeptionelle und praktische Beiträge.
