Job description

Description provided by German Aerospace Center (DLR)

At the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm, we develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and bring them to prototype maturity together with industry. In addition, we are driving forward the transfer to aeronautics, digitalisation, energy, security and transport.  We have an interdisciplinary approach: Theoretical basic research and experimental tests meet engineering implementation.

What to expect

The Quantum Information and Communication department (QT-QIC) investigates questions of quantum information by using synergies between theoretical and experimental basic research and develops technological applications in collaboration with industry. Topics include research into quantum computing hardware and software, the realization of quantum cryptography and global quantum communication, for example on satellites. Research is also being conducted into how to communicate efficiently in quantum networks over long distances and at high loss rates.

You explore the potential of entangled quantum sensors via theoretical analysis and simulations as part of your master thesis. You investigate e.g. for which applications is entanglement of quantum sensors over large distances especially useful and how the entanglement can be established.

Your tasks

  • You independently familiarize yourself with the literature on entangled quantum sensors.
  • You discuss potential applications of entangled quantum sensors with prospective users and manufacturers of quantum sensors.
  • You develop and analyze possible application scenarios for entangled quantum sensors.
  • You simulate the deployment of entangled quantum sensors.
  • You document the research findings, publish them on various scientific platforms, and present them at national and international scientific conferences.

Your profile

  • Student in a scientific university degree program (Master) in natural sciences or engineering (e.g. material science, physics, electrical engineering) or other degree programs relevant to the position
  • Solid knowledge of theoretical quantum physics
  • Programming skills (Matlab, Python, or similar)
  • Interest in collaborating with experimental groups and potential users
  • Independent and structured way of working
  • Good language skills in both German and English

Unfortunately, it is not possible to offer remuneration for the completion of the Master’s thesis.

We look forward to getting to know you!
