uni-assist

uni-assist is the central application service that evaluates international school and university certificates for around 170 German universities. It converts foreign grades into the German system and issues the VPD that many universities require before you can apply.

uni-assist e.V. is an association of German universities that centralizes the screening of international applications. It checks whether foreign certificates meet German entry requirements (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung), converts grades using the modified Bavarian formula, and forwards complete applications to the universities or issues a preliminary review documentation (VPD).

Whether you must use uni-assist depends on the university: some handle international admissions in-house, others require either a full uni-assist application or just the VPD. Each evaluation costs a handling fee per semester and university, and processing takes several weeks, longer in the peak season around application deadlines.

What it means for working students

Treat uni-assist as a deadline amplifier: documents must arrive weeks before the university deadline, and certified copies plus sworn translations take time to organize from abroad. Upload everything digitally first, check whether your target universities accept digital-only submissions, and plan one buffer month. The earlier you clear uni-assist, the earlier you can chase admission, visa appointment, and blocked account, which is the real critical path to your first semester and your first working student job.
