Visa & residence

Aufenthaltstitel

Aufenthaltstitel is the umbrella term for German residence titles: visa, temporary residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis), Blue Card, ICT card, permanent settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), and EU long-term residence. Students typically hold an Aufenthaltserlaubnis for study purposes under §16b AufenthG.

An Aufenthaltstitel is any official document that legalizes a stay in Germany. The Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz) defines the family: the entry visa, the temporary Aufenthaltserlaubnis tied to a purpose (study, work, family), the Blue Card, and the permanent Niederlassungserlaubnis. The purpose printed on the title controls what you may do, including how much you may work.

Student residence permits under §16b AufenthG are usually issued for one to two years and renewed against proof of study progress, financing, and health insurance. Each title carries supplementary sheets (Zusatzblatt) spelling out work rights, typically the 140/280-day allowance for students.

What it means for working students

Three practical habits protect your status: start the renewal three months before expiry because appointment backlogs at the Ausländerbehörde are long; keep your proof of financing and enrollment certificates organized for every renewal; and read your Zusatzblatt, because that small sheet, not internet forums, defines what work your specific title allows. If your permit expires while a renewal is pending, the Fiktionsbescheinigung keeps your status legal.
