In Cologne you register your address at a Kundenzentrum, the citizen office in each of the city's nine districts, bookable citywide at termine.stadt-koeln.de. The Cologne-specific detail that matters most, and that most guides miss: on Monday and Wednesday the Kundenzentren run as walk-ins with no appointment at all. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday you need a booked slot. That walk-in window is your escape hatch when the online calendar is fully booked weeks out, which in Cologne it usually is.

Which Office: Cologne's Kundenzentren

Cologne is split into nine districts (Stadtbezirke): Innenstadt, Rodenkirchen, Lindenthal, Ehrenfeld, Nippes, Chorweiler, Porz, Kalk, and Mülheim. Each district has a Bezirksrathaus with its own Kundenzentrum (the Innenstadt office is the one exception that sits outside its Bezirksrathaus). You are not tied to the district you live in, any Kundenzentrum can process your Anmeldung, so compare all nine and take whichever has the earliest slot or the most convenient walk-in.

The Two Ways In: Walk-In Days vs Appointments

If you can't find an online slot, don't give up, just turn up on a Monday or Wednesday. Go early, ideally before the office opens, because the walk-in queue fills fast and offices cap how many numbers they hand out. Bring all your documents and budget a couple of hours.

How to Book an Appointment Online

For a Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday slot, use the city's official booking portal:

1. Go to termine.stadt-koeln.de and choose the registry category (Ausweise, Meldewesen und Sonstiges).

2. Select "Anmeldung" / "An- oder Ummeldung" and compare available slots across all nine Kundenzentren, not just the nearest one.

3. Pick a slot and confirm. Save the confirmation email to your phone.

Appointments in Cologne are often booked several weeks out, so book the moment you have a confirmed address. A useful unofficial helper is terminator.koeln, a free community-run tool that shows real-time availability across the city's offices and can notify you when new slots or cancellations appear. Can You Skip the Office? Cologne's Online Anmeldung

Germany's federal online registration service (elektronische Wohnsitzanmeldung) is live nationwide at wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de, and Cologne participates. In theory you register from your laptop, no appointment, no waiting room. The catch is the same everywhere:

• It generally requires a German ID card or residence permit with the online identification function (eID) activated, used via a BundID account and the AusweisApp on your phone.

For most international working students arriving for the first time, that's the blocker, you won't yet have a German ID document with eID enabled on your very first registration. So the in-person route, a Tuesday/Thursday/Friday appointment or a Monday/Wednesday walk-in, is still the realistic path. The online option becomes useful later, for an Ummeldung once you already hold a German residence permit or ID card with eID activated.

Documents for Anmeldung in Cologne

You need the standard nationwide set, and the Anmeldung itself is free:

• Anmeldeformular (Meldeschein): fill it in advance, you can find the form on stadt-koeln.de or complete one at the office.

• Wohnungsgeberbestätigung: signed by your landlord, Hausverwaltung, or main tenant. Chase this down on the day you get your keys, it's the single most common reason appointments and walk-ins get turned away.

• Valid passport (and visa, if applicable). Bring it even if you also have a residence permit card.

• Rental contract (Mietvertrag), as backup proof alongside the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.

After Your Anmeldung in Cologne

You'll receive your Anmeldebestätigung (Meldebescheinigung) on the spot. From there:
