Working Student (f/m/d) for Agentic AI and Robot Learning Research in Cooperation with KIT

What You'll Do

As a working student within SAP's Sustainability Innovation research team, you will play a hands-on role in a PhD research project on agentic AI-driven autonomous battery disassembly. The project explores how SAP ERP product data (bills of materials, production routings, component specifications) can instruct an AI agent to plan and execute robotic disassembly sequences autonomously. You will build and extend robotic simulation environments in MuJoCo, develop scripted demonstrations from ERP product knowledge, and support the training pipeline for robot learning policies using the LeRobot framework on a dedicated GPU server. Your work connects robotics simulation, robot learning, and enterprise AI in a real research context.

The project is carried out in close cooperation with the Intuitive Robots Lab at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), led by TT-Prof. Rudolf Lioutikov.

What You Bring

• Student (f/m/d) at a university or university of applied sciences, preferred fields: computer science, robotics, mechatronics, or information systems
• Strong Python programming skills and familiarity with ML frameworks (PyTorch or TensorFlow) required
• Experience or strong interest in robot simulation (MuJoCo preferred) and/or robot learning frameworks such as LeRobot or OpenVLA
• Fluent English required; German is a plus
• Self-driven and hands-on; comfortable in an applied research setting. Plus: prior project experience in robotics, simulation, or AI/ML; version control with Git

Meet your team

The SAP Sustainability Innovation research team is part of SAP's Sustainability Growth area, driving research and innovation at the intersection of AI, autonomous robotics, and enterprise sustainability. We work closely with leading academic institutions to develop practical AI systems for industrial applications.

This role is part of an industry PhD collaboration between SAP and KIT's Intuitive Robots Lab (IAR), led by TT-Prof. Rudolf Lioutikov, one of Europe's leading researchers in robot learning and visual-language-action models. You will work directly with the PhD researcher (Chima Nmerenu, SAP/KIT) and gain hands-on access to both SAP's enterprise AI capabilities and KIT's state-of-the-art robotics infrastructure.

Your set of application documents should contain a cover letter, a resume in table form, school leaving certificates, certificate of enrollment, current university transcript of records, copies of any academic degrees already earned, and if available, references from former employers (including internships). Please also describe your experience and skills in foreign languages and computer programs / programming languages.
