About
The Brost-Stiftung is a charitable foundation under civil law based in Essen. It was established on 1 June 2011 in fulfilment of the will of Anneliese Brost (1920 to 2010), the Bochum-born publisher who co-owned the WAZ media group after the death of her husband Erich Brost. Its guiding motto is hers: "Gutes tun für die Region und die hier lebenden Menschen". With an endowment of roughly 374 million euros, it is one of the largest foundations in the Ruhr region. It funds knowledge-based, forward-looking projects in six areas: art and culture, youth and elderly welfare, education and vocational training, public health, social welfare and other charitable purposes. By the end of 2022 it had approved 196 projects and distributed 41.9 million euros, about 40 percent through its own initiatives and 60 percent through partnerships. Flagship projects include the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr in Bochum, the Metropolenschreiber Ruhr residency, the lit.RUHR literature festival and the Ruhr Natur sustainability programme. The foundation is led by a board chaired by Prof. Bodo Hombach, with Dr. Boris Berger as deputy chairman, and is supervised by the Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf. Its head office is at Zeißbogen 28 in Essen, with a project office on Huyssenallee. Funding applications are accepted year-round without deadlines, and the project funding team that reviews and accompanies them is where working students are placed.
