The Position

You will complete your internship/Master's thesis in the Near Patient Care Research & Early Development chapter. The chapter's mission is the pre-development of near patient care systems for subsequent product development.

Your task will consist of developing a novel flow-through biosensor and characterizing its performance. To accomplish this, you will:

  • Build up a fluidic test setup for whole blood processing
  • Develop new sensor layouts and methods for layer construction, employing state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques
  • Integrate functional sensor components into the fluidic test setup
  • Synthesize/assemble and characterize different functional sensor components, including thick-film sensors
  • Evaluate measurement data using newly developed algorithms and advanced analytical methods
  • Work independently on assigned work packages: plan and execute experiments, document results, and prepare detailed technical analyses


Who You Are
We are looking for a highly motivated student with the following educational background:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program, with a B.Sc. degree in Biomedical Engineering, Microsystems Technology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Physics, Electrochemistry, or a related field (very good grades required)

Technical Experience & Knowledge:

  • Ideally, you bring knowledge and experience in prototyping of microfluidic devices and manufacturing or characterization of (bio)sensors
  • You are experienced in instrument control programming and fluidics control engineering
  • You are familiar with the fundamentals of optical, spectroscopic and electrochemical measurement techniques
  • Ideally, you have knowledge of micromachining processes
  • Ideally, you possess not only basic knowledge of statistics, but also experience with methods for filtering and fitting measurement data
  • Familiarity with various analytical and characterization methods is advantageous
  • Willingness to work with human material, e.g., whole blood samples, plasma, serum, and interstitial fluid is required

Personal Qualities:

  • High technical interest, especially in interdisciplinary work
  • Enthusiasm and passion for microfluidics and biosensor development
  • Independence, strong commitment, and goal-oriented mindset
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills; approachability and sociability
  • Advanced level of English and at least an Upper-Intermediate level of German
  • Eager to gain practical experience in an industrial setting
