About the Team
Our Semiconductor and Power Electronics team focuses on the development of advanced power-electronics and semiconductor solutions for next-generation electric powertrain systems.
Our work covers SiC power-semiconductor applications, circuit and PCB design, hardware integration, prototype development, semiconductor characterization and high-voltage validation.
As an international and fast-growing R&D team, we work closely across technical functions and locations to develop, build and validate innovative hardware solutions.
We are looking for a motivated Power Electronics Hardware Intern who is interested in gaining hands-on experience across the development process—from circuit and PCB design to prototype implementation and experimental validation.
Your Responsibilities
1. Circuit and PCB Design
- Support the design of power-electronics circuits and related hardware for automotive and semiconductor applications.
- Assist with schematic design and PCB layout using Altium Designer or Cadence.
- Support the selection and evaluation of components such as SiC MOSFETs, IGBTs, gate drivers, capacitors, inductors, sensors and protection devices.
- Perform basic electrical calculations and simulations under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Participate in design reviews and document design changes and technical findings.
2. Hardware and Mechanical Integration
- Support the development of high-current, high-voltage and mixed-signal PCBs.
- Assist in reviewing electrical isolation, creepage and clearance distances, EMC, thermal performance and manufacturability.
- Use 3D modelling tools to support the packaging and mechanical integration of power-electronics hardware.
- Prepare design files, bills of materials and technical documentation for prototype manufacturing.
- Support the coordination of prototype production, assembly and inspection.
3. Prototype Commissioning and Debugging
- Support the initial power-up, commissioning, debugging and functional verification of hardware prototypes.
- Assist in identifying hardware faults and analysing potential root causes.
- Work with senior engineers to implement and verify design improvements.
- Document technical issues, test observations and troubleshooting results.
4. Semiconductor Characterization and Hardware Testing
- Assist with the characterization of power-semiconductor devices and related circuits.
- Support electrical, functional and performance testing under different operating conditions.
- Use laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power analysers, high-voltage probes, current probes, electronic loads and thermal-measurement equipment under appropriate supervision.
- Support the evaluation of switching behaviour, efficiency, losses and thermal performance.
- Follow all laboratory and high-voltage safety procedures.
5. Technical Collaboration
- Collaborate with semiconductor, electrical, mechanical, thermal and testing engineers.
- Work with engineering teams in Germany and China on technical tasks and prototype development.
- Prepare test records, technical summaries and presentations.
- Take ownership of assigned tasks and proactively communicate progress, risks and support needs.
Requirements
1. Education
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD's degree programme in Power Electronics, Semiconductor Engineering, Microelectronics, Semiconductor Packaging, Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
- A strong academic or project background in power electronics or semiconductor hardware is expected.
- Previous project experience involving SiC power semiconductors is highly preferred.
2. Mandatory Technical Skills
- Previous academic, research or personal-project experience in PCB design is required.
- Experience with at least one of the following design tools: Altium Designer and Cadence.
- Basic practical experience with at least one 3D modelling or mechanical-design tool.
- Basic understanding of power-electronics circuits, semiconductor devices and electronic-hardware development.
- Willingness to participate in hands-on hardware assembly, commissioning and laboratory testing.
3. Preferred Experience
- Experience with SiC power-semiconductor projects.
- Experience with gate-driver circuits, protection circuits or power-converter hardware.
- Experience with semiconductor characterization or electrical testing.
- Previous exposure to high-voltage hardware or high-voltage measurements.
- Familiarity with EMC, electrical isolation and thermal-management principles.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, LTspice, Python or comparable simulation and data-analysis tools.
This internship includes both design and testing activities. Applicants whose experience is limited exclusively to semiconductor testing, without any relevant circuit or PCB design experience, may not match the core focus of the position.

Wichtiges für Werkstudierende

Praktika haben keine 20-Stunden-Grenze, ein freiwilliges Praktikum über drei Monate muss aber in der Regel mindestens den Mindestlohn zahlen. Pflichtpraktika im Studium sind davon ausgenommen.

Pflichtpraktika sind weitgehend von Sozialabgaben befreit. Freiwillige Praktika gelten ab einer gewissen Dauer als reguläre Beschäftigung, dann fallen meist Beiträge an.

Studierende von außerhalb der EU dürfen 140 volle oder 280 halbe Tage im Jahr arbeiten (seit März 2024, zuvor 120/240). Ein Werkstudentenvertrag passt meist in diesen Rahmen — prüfe die genauen Grenzen auf deinem Aufenthaltstitel.
