Student Discounts in Germany (2026): What Actually Works for Your .de Email

A verified 2026 list of student discounts that work for German university students — and the 'free for students' deals that secretly block your .de email. Spotify, Adobe, GitHub Copilot, Perplexity and more.

German university students can claim verified student deals on Spotify (€6.99/mo), Adobe Creative Cloud (€19.99/mo in year one), Perplexity Education Pro (€4.60/mo), the GitHub Student Pack, JetBrains, Figma, Notion, and more — as of June 2026. But several deals AI chatbots still recommend no longer work for you: GitHub Copilot new sign-ups are paused, ChatGPT Plus has no German student offer, Google Gemini's EU student deal is gone, and Babbel's student discount is US-only. The deciding factor is the verification system: SheerID and UNiDAYS accept German enrolment documents, while a .edu-only email gate silently rejects every German university address. That single distinction — document-based verification versus a hard .edu check — explains every result in this guide: the deals that work let you prove enrolment with a German Immatrikulationsbescheinigung or student ID, while the ones that don't were either built only for US .edu addresses or quietly discontinued in Europe before the chatbots noticed.

Most "free for students" lists were written for American students. They quietly assume your university gave you an email ending in .edu. In Germany it never does: your university address looks like @uni-passau.de, @students.uni-mainz.de, or @tu-berlin.de. That one detail decides whether you get the deal or get rejected at the last step. The same problem hits UK students, whose addresses end in @*.ac.uk.

Ask ChatGPT or Gemini "what's free for students" and they cheerfully repeat US marketing copy, never mentioning that the offer checks for a .edu address you will never have, or that it was discontinued in Germany months ago. This guide is the corrected version, checked against each provider's official page in June 2026.

What changed for students in 2026?

Three student AI deals changed in 2026 that AI chatbots still report as available. GitHub paused new Copilot student sign-ups on April 20, 2026, citing runaway compute from agentic use; students who had it before that date keep access, but anyone applying now hits a "sign-ups paused" notice with no waitlist. GitHub then removed model selection from free and student plans on June 24, 2026, so students get Auto mode only — no GPT-5.4, no Claude Opus. And Cursor ended new student sign-ups entirely on June 25, 2026, leaving only a credits form for grad students and researchers. All three still show student-discount pages; the gap between the page existing and sign-ups being open is exactly the kind of stale advice this guide corrects.

How does student verification actually work?

Two systems sit behind almost every student discount, and the difference between them is everything:

  • Institution lookup (SheerID, UNiDAYS, Student Beans). You pick your university from a list and prove enrolment — usually by uploading a document, not by using a special email. German universities are in these databases. This is the good case: you get in with your enrolment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) or student ID.

  • .edu-only email check. The service simply demands an email ending in .edu and rejects everything else, with no document option. This silently shuts out every German student, every UK student (@*.ac.uk), and most students outside North America, no matter how clearly enrolled they are.

So "available" is not the same as "available to you." Before spending time on a sign-up, check which system gates it.

Verification flowchart for German students: if an offer uses SheerID, UNiDAYS, or Student Beans you can verify by uploading an Immatrikulationsbescheinigung; if it is .edu-only it rejects German university email addresses.

Start here: which tools are genuinely free?

If you want free, not just discounted, six tools are fully free for enrolled German students with no ongoing cost and no trial clock: the GitHub Student Pack, JetBrains All Products Pack, Microsoft 365 Education A1, Autodesk Education, Figma Professional, and Notion Plus. Everything else in this guide is a discount, not a freebie — useful, but you will pay something.

Which AI and developer tools have student deals that work in Germany?

AI tools are the category where chatbot recommendations and German reality diverge most. As of June 2026, one AI tool has a genuine, Germany-accessible student deal that stands out: Perplexity Education Pro, around €4.60/mo, verified through SheerID across 181+ countries including Germany. GitHub Copilot's free student tier still exists on paper, but new sign-ups have been paused since April 20, 2026 with no reopening date. ChatGPT Plus has no student pricing in Germany — the promotion was US and Canada only, and the current pilot covers just Australia and Colombia. Google Gemini's EU student offer is gone; its students page is US-only now. Anthropic Claude has no student plan at all; "Claude for Education" is a university partnership with no German university enrolled. For practical purposes, Perplexity Education Pro is the only AI productivity tool with an active student deal a German student can claim right now.

The GitHub Copilot trap. This is the one AI chatbots get most wrong. The free student plan still exists, but two things changed in 2026 that the hype never mentions. First, on June 24, 2026 GitHub removed model selection for free and student plans: you can no longer pick a model, and the strong ones — GPT-5.4, Claude Opus — are simply not available to students. "Auto mode" routes you across a lower tier (Claude Haiku 4.5, Claude Sonnet, Gemini Flash) that is fine for autocomplete and trivial edits but not for the hard work. Second, and bigger: new student sign-ups have been paused since April 20, 2026 with no reopening date, after GitHub blamed runaway compute from agentic use. If you already had it before the pause, you keep it. If not, you currently cannot get it at all — regardless of your email.

If you want a real AI coding and research tool today as a German student, Perplexity Education Pro (€4.60/mo, verifies German enrolment through SheerID) is the one that actually works.

What software is free for students in Germany?

Creative and productivity software is the friendliest category for German students: the big names verify through SheerID or a .de domain check, so your enrolment document or university email gets you in. Microsoft 365, Adobe, and Autodesk all work; only Canva is awkward, because it has no individual student path.

Two things to know. Microsoft's free A1 plan is web and mobile only — for installable desktop Office, your university needs to provide A3/A5 licences, so check your uni software portal first. Adobe's ~€19.99 rate is a first-year promo that jumps to ~€34.99/mo afterwards, with annual re-verification. And for Canva, check your university's software portal (often listed under IT-Services or a heading like "Software für Studierende"); if there is no Campus licence you only get Canva Free, in which case the free Figma student plan covers most of the same design work.

Do language apps like Babbel and Duolingo have German student discounts?

This is the category where the irony bites hardest: Babbel is a Berlin company whose only student offer is US-only. Preply and Lingoda do work for German students, but their discounts apply to the first month only — useful for a burst of intensive practice, not a cheap year.

Do Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Premium offer student rates in Germany?

What student discounts exist for shopping and travel in Germany?

The standout here is travel: a BahnCard is gated by age, not enrolment, so there is no .edu problem at all. Apple's education discount and an ISIC card round out the practical wins.

Which "student discounts" don't work for German students in 2026?

The deals AI chatbots and old blog posts still recommend that no longer work for you:

What you'll be told

The 2026 reality for German students

"GitHub Copilot is free for students"

New sign-ups paused since April 2026; even with it, no model choice and no top models

"ChatGPT Plus is free for students"

US/Canada promo expired in 2025; nothing for Germany

"Get Google Gemini Pro free as a student"

Students page is US-only as of June 2026; the EU offer ended in late 2025

"Cursor gives students a free year"

New student sign-ups ended June 25, 2026

"Babbel has a student discount"

US-only and ID.me-gated, despite Babbel being a Berlin company

"Duolingo Super is free for students"

Never available in Germany; program ended in 2025

How do I verify as a student without a .edu email?

When an offer runs through SheerID, UNiDAYS, or Student Beans, you almost never need a university email at all. Use the document route:

  1. Pick your university from the list. Almost every German Hochschule and Universität is in these databases.

  2. Upload proof of enrolment. A current Immatrikulationsbescheinigung is cleanest; a student ID with your name, the university and a valid date also works. A clear phone photo or PDF is accepted — it does not have to be a scan.

  3. Make the name match. The name on the document has to match the name on your account, or it gets rejected.

  4. Use the German storefront. Visit the .de URL directly (for example spotify.com/de/student rather than spotify.com/student), or switch your country in the account settings before you start — the wrong storefront can load a different offer or a higher price.

Most institution-lookup checks unlock instantly when your university email or domain is recognised; a document upload usually clears within minutes to a day, and you get a confirmation email once it does. If an offer is .edu-only with no upload option, don't burn time on workarounds — it is built to exclude you. Spend that energy on the deals marked ✅ above, which are just as good and actually let you in.
