The Role
Rakuten Kobo Inc. is looking for a Data Engineer Intern to join our Big Data Team in Darmstadt, Germany! The team is comprised of many highly talented enthusiastic individuals who ensure the services and offerings from Kobo are available to both internal and external customers. This position reports to our Manager, Tolino Business Intelligence.

The Role
Rakuten Kobo Inc. is looking for a Data Engineer Intern to join our Big Data Team in Darmstadt, Germany! The team is comprised of many highly talented enthusiastic individuals who ensure the services and offerings from Kobo are available to both internal and external customers. This position reports to our Manager, Tolino Business Intelligence.
The Person
- A pragmatic generalist who tackles problems end-to-end and automates manual work.
- Self-motivated, creative, detail-oriented; collaborates well and learns fast.
- Thrives in a fast-paced environment and isn’t afraid to dive into any layer of the stack.
- Eager to learn and contribute to cutting-edge big data and potentially AI initiatives.
- Design, build, and document efficient ETL/ELT data pipelines and models.
- Write and optimize SQL and Python for large-scale datasets.
- Visualize data and deliver BI dashboards/reports using our BI tools (e.g., Domo, Tableau) for internal and external partners.
- Prepare and ingest data into Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
The Skillset
- Experience with Python and SQL.
- Ability to prioritize competing requests and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Initiative in communicating, asking questions, and learning.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in German and English.
- Proactive, creative problem solver with strong time management.
- Works independently with a structured approach.
- Comfortable working with very large datasets.
- Currently enrolled in a relevant Bachelor's or Master's degree program (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering).
- Experience with CI/CD tools.
- Experience with GCP and BI tools (Domo, Tableau).
- Experience working with REST APIs and Python data libraries (Pandas, NumPy).
- Experience building ETL/big data pipelines with workflow tools (e.g., Airflow).
