Student Assistant for developing a small-scale cooperative vehicle demonstrator (f/m/x)
Stellenbeschreibung
At the DLR Institute for AI Security, we research and develop AI-related methods, processes, algorithms, technologies and execution and system environments. Our focus is on secure and standard-compliant AI, cybersecurity in open data and service ecosystems and AI, as well as automation in mobility and logistics.
What Awaits You
In the Execution Environments and Innovative Methods department, we bring together novel AI methods and challenging execution environments. In particular, we focus on the energy-efficient implementation of AI for mobile systems, quantum AI and neuromorphic AI approaches. The department thus provides innovative AI approaches for use in safety-critical applications.
We are looking for a motivated student to join a development project focused on building a demonstrator using identical vehicles at 1:10 scale. In this project, the student will work at the intersection of mechanical design, electronics, and software engineering, contributing to the integration of various electronic parts inside the vehicle chassis, as well as to the development of lightweight software for vehicle control and monitoring. At the end of the project, a simple AI driver will be deployed to control the vehicles and demonstrate basic cooperative driving scenarios such as platooning.
Expected Tasks
We look forward to getting to know you!

Expected Tasks
- Mounting electronic components on the mini-scale vehicle chassis. A 3D model of the vehicle will be provided, but modifications may be required to properly and securely integrate the electronics into the vehicle chassis
- Assemble and wire the electronic components. This includes correctly adding resistors, capacitors, and inductors to tolerate electrical spikes, if required, and validating the system using measurement tools such as an oscilloscope
- Implement lightweight software for monitoring and controlling the vehicle, which can communicate with a central server using REST API. The system architecture will be provided
- At the end of the project, multiple mini-scale vehicles should be able to drive on a prepared floor with printed road layouts
- 3D modelling skills for designing and adapting mounting electronic components
- Basic electrical engineering skills, including: soldering, reading datasheets, testing and debugging electronic circuits using appropriate tools
- Experience in developing a REST API server for a user interface or control system
- Ability to document all designs and procedures in a clear and formal way (e.g., schematics, layouts, wiring diagrams, and documentation of tests)
- Teamwork skills including communication in both English and German
